I tend to not use products that don't work well thus I've hated my last dozen cell phones - including my current hockey puck/blackberry. So yes, this is a post about the iPhone. Perhaps you've already read other blogs this morning buzzing about the iPhone (the sleek ads were just released) -- clearly Apple shouldn't have to do too much paid advertising for launch. The hype can seem ridiculous but the desire for a device revolution seems very real. It's been obvious for years but somehow it all seems to make sense right now. I'm sure the product will be "good" but how can good become miraculous? here are a few words & phrases from Apple's product paragraph - "revolutionary", "breakthrough", "pioneering", "ushers in an era", "power and sophistication", "redefining." This is Apple positioning us for both lust & salvation, dressing a device with style & elitism and then jamming it with multiple services that we never thought we'd have so soon. The iPhone is far more than a phone but that's the weakest industry link for consumers -- that's the crack in the dam to exploit -- tablets and mobile PCs are for nerds.
Here are a few final thoughts - the RAZR phone was a fine design and sold a large number of units, the Blackberry met a functional need and sold a large number of units, GPS units are on every Father's Day list and are sold everywhere, the Google brand and it's map product are basically another family member.......adding all this up makes it seem a great bet to see the iPhone rock the consumer market. My only concern is cracking the screen.....(and getting the $ for one).
